MLA Symposium: The role of information services in emergency preparedness and response

Plan to attend an all-day MLA symposium on May 15, 2005 in San Antonio exploring the role of information services for emergency preparedness and response. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Harold Timboe, director of the Center for Public Health Preparedness and Biomedical Research at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center, San Antonio. Other speakers include public health and emergency preparedness personnel as well as librarians supporting emergency preparedness efforts. This symposium is being sponsored by the National Library of Medicine and MLA's Public Health/Health Administration Section, Federal Libraries Section, Nursing and Allied Heath Resources Section and Hospital Libraries Section. Participants in the symposium will earn 6.5 MLA contact hours.

7am - 9am: NAHRS Executive Board Meeting

7pm - ??: NAHRS Dinner: All NAHRS members and friends are invited to dinner at Boudros, a favorite bistro of locals. Boudros located on the beautiful RiverWalk is just 2 blocks west of the RiverCenter. Thie cuisine includes Texas and southerwestern specialities. There are many mouthwatering food choices: smoked shrimp enchiladas, blackened prime rib, many gulf sea foods and vegetarian selections. Dinners will cost between $10-20. Please note that this is listed as "Lunch with Sections." This means that when you register for the conference, you can reserve a lunch for this session (charge is $25.00). If you did not purchase your ticket ahead of time, you can buy a lunch ticket at the MLA Registration Desk for Section lunches until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17. You also have the option to bring your own lunch (it must be purchased from the Rivercenter, however, in keeping with Marriott hotel policy) or come for the meeting only. Hope to see members and any potential new members there!

NAHRS is sponsoring this section Program entitled "The Role of Information and Policy in Health Care". The theme of this session is that health disparities
exist and that as librarians we can increase the awareness of politicians and administators about health disparities. Furthermore, we can increase access to
health information to the disadvantaged. Three presenters will be discussing how they addressed these issues:

Annabelle Nunez -- "Bridging the Gap on Health Disparities: A Librarian's Role"
NAHRS invited speaker will Annabelle Nunez speak on her role as Service Libraian for the Hispanic Center of Excellence (HCOE) Arizona Health Sciences
Tucson, AZ.

Diana McDuffee -- "Disadvantaged but Not Disconnected: Everyone Goes Local"
(North Carolina was the first state to get its local resources connected to MedlinePlus.

Peter W. Droese -- "Utilization of the Medical Librarian as a Provider of Information Services on Health Policy and Health Disparities for State Medicaid
Programs"

The role of medical librarians as expert searchers in supporting Medicaid Programs and being collection development specialists in health policy and
multicultural health from a state and regional perspective.
